While you may have already seen Batman V Superman, our review won’t be up until Sunday. In the meantime we’re going to take a look at two movies that are either the basis for Batman V Superman or somewhere along those lines. The movies we will be talking about are the Dark Knight Returns movies. Just remember that Batman V Superman’s plot isn’t based entirely on these movies but are rather just an inspiration for the movie. First of all these movies are based off the comics by Frank Miller. The comics were released in 1986 but the movies won’t be adopted until in recent years. The movies were released in two parts and the first one was released in September of 2012. This of course is an animated movie and it looks good and feels good as well. There will be some minor spoilers if you haven’t watched the movie yet.
The first movie simply called The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 and it takes place in an alternate reality. In this time period the members of the Justice League have gone their separate ways. Batman has retired in action for decades and in the events of the movie Bruce Wayne is already in his 60’s. Gotham has been overrun by the Mutant Gang and crime is at an all-time high. After some period of time, Bruce Wayne decides to suit back into action as Batman hence the title the Dark Knight Returns. There are two points in this movie.
The first point is the dealings with the Harvey Dent’s return as Two Face. This is also the part where Batman is getting used to going back into shape. After Two Face’s defeat or suicide rather, Batman now has to deal with the Mutant Gang. They are of course the second priority in Batman’s list. Then along comes the new Robin and the third one in this timeline and that is Carrie Kelly. Batman’s first encounter with the Mutant Gang Leader went bad. His second battle with the Mutant Gang Leader went well making him win making the group divide. After Batman’s dealings with the Mutant Gang they or at least some of the members became the Sons of Batman as an independent group of vigilantes protecting Gotham from the threats of crime.
The end of The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 gives you the site of the return of the Joker as well but that all takes place in Part 2. The Dark Knight Returns is a solid comic and is deemed as one of the darker incarnations of Batman. The animated movie is a good adaptation of the first parts of the comics. We’re going to take a look at The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 next time.
