Let’s continue with our look into the Soulcalibur series. The game we are looking at today is Soulcalibur 3 which is the fourth game in the main series games. Unlike the previous game, Soulcalibur 3 was exclusive to the Playstation 2 in terms of its console ports which was released in 2005. The arcade came later in 2006 which is the opposite of most games. There are also no exclusive characters this time but the roster is enough to keep you company. First of all, the graphical capabilities have come a long way since the series began in the mid 90’s. The music is still the same giving you that magical and medieval theme to it.
The plot of Soulcalibur 3 takes place some time after Soulcalibur 2. It takes place only a couple of months after the end of that game. Siegfried has been freed of the hold by Soul Edge on him. He is able to use the Soulcalibur to seal Soul Edge but both swords are sealed in the process. Siegfried decides to take both the sealed swords to find a way to unseal Soulcalibur and forever seal Soul Edge. He sets out on a journey to do so. Unknown to Siegfried is that, the former Azure Knight Nightmare that possessed him, it grew to have a conscience of its own and started out killing again which leads to the events of the game.
The gameplay for Soulcalibur 3 is pretty much the same as the previous games. It is a fighting game where players choose from a plethora of characters having their respective weapons and fighting styles. The roster is the biggest so far but most of the older characters don’t return. The standard game modes are still there like the arcade, time attack, practice and story mode. There are a few new features to the game which the old ones didn’t have. There is the Create a Soul mode where players can create a character on their own.
The character can be made into having a distinct fighting style as well as a weapon of choice. Then of course the look of their character will also be changed by the players in terms of their clothes, gender and physical look. One other mode is Chronicles of the Sword where the players’ created character can be used in a game where it mimics real time strategy and having some RPG elements. One other mode is the Tales of Souls. This is like an alternate story mode where players choose a character and they go on a journey where they make and choose different decisions where they could either fight Abyss or Night Terror as the end boss.
That concludes our look into the Soulcalibur 3 game but we’ll take a look at more games in the series next time.
