Just below Mt. Fuji lies a dark forest filled with trees, it is known to many as Aokigahara. There are many stories that surround the mysterious sea of trees. Some might be based on facts while other on fiction. Aokigahara is known as Japan’s Suicide Forest because every year a 100 people or more are reported to have committed suicide there. The most popular way of ending their lives would have to be hanging themselves using ropes that they usually tie on tree branches. While others try other methods to do so like overdosing themselves, starvation or dehydration, only a few ever succeed in doing so. It is unknown as to why people come to Aokigahara to commit suicide. Some believe that perhaps spirits of those who have ended their lives lure people with negative thoughts and suicidal tendencies to Aokigahara which is why in the end, they too become victims themselves. Whether or not these stories are true remains to be seen by those who would like to come there.
The forest contains a number of rocky and icy caverns which are popular tourist destinations. However due to the tall trees that surrounds Aokigahara, they block wind density. There is also that issue about the forest not having living wildlife. Because of these reasons, Aokigahara is an eerily silent place. There are many signs in both English and Japanese. They are warning signs to those who want to commit suicide while inside the forest. Although the signs are massive and are placed strategically in places for all people to see, some still continue to Aokigahara to end their misery. Because of the piling number of bodies of people who commit suicide, there are many forest rangers who do their annual body search in order to recover the bodies of those who have perished. Forest rangers in Aokigahara are also tasked to always roam the forest to prevent more people from committing such a pitiful practice. To this day, Aokigahara is considered one of the creepiest place on Earth.
There are many references about Aokigahara that can be found in books, movies and even TV shows. In 2008, the American TV program, Destination Truth, went there to visit and investigate. Japanese books like the 1960 novel, “Nami No To” by Seicho Matsumoto showed two lovers committing suicide in the forest as well as Wataru Tsurumui’s 1993 controversial book, “The Manual Of Suicides” which shows various modes of suicide and it even recommends Aokighara as the perfect place to die. Unfortunately, this book is also a common thing that forest rangers find near the victim’s belongings and corpse as well. The forest is filled with belongings of those who have perished and those who have failed. It is also filled with corpses of different stages of decomposition. Some are recovered right away but others are not. It is said that the suicides committed by many people in Aokigahara have already attached itself to the soil and the trees. Which is why the place itself has the possibility of generating paranormal activity. It is as if the place itself prevents many to ever leave especially those who have the intention to die there in the first place.
Suicide is a very sad way to end thing to do. Ending your life is not the solution, no matter what kind of problem you face. Our lives are precious and we should always think about the people that we will leave behind. Many people in Japan have various reasons for ending their lives. Many struggle with their personal lives while other blame it on society. Aokigahara is filled with trees with homemade nooses. Some have been used for hanging while others seem to have not been used at all. There are also discarded tents and personal belongings by those who have entered the forest. Many people who do not want to lose their way often use tapes or ribbons which they make sure will go around the trees to show them the way back out of the forest. In the past, suicide was honorable in Japan. It was even a common practice during times of drought and starvation however, suicide has already changed through the years. Whether or not many more people will take their lives in Aokigahara, nobody really knows. Until this day, Aokigahara will forever be a place shrouded with mystery and death.
